McDouall Stuart Hitches a Ride blends rollicking road trip adventure with migrant memoir. Journalist and adventurer Rosemary Cadden shares a Scottish hometown with nineteenth-century explorer John McDouall Stuart. While she follows Stuart's historic journey across his adopted homeland of Australia, she creates a unique connection across centuries.
By weaving tartan patterns into the Australian landscape, our cover design provides an intriguing visual bridge between Scotland and Australia.
Cadden's witty, humorous prose delivers an often hilarious account of the expedition, which we wanted to reflect within our interior design approach. And so, for the titles, we chose a playful, hand-lettered typeface that captures the book's lighthearted spirit.
Each section features a consistent identity with a remarkable detail: the number of flies scattered across the pages corresponds to the part number, adding that annoyingly distinctive Australian touch to the design.
Arjan has been amazing. He understood what I was looking for from the start and took it up a few notches with his ideas and skill. I am so happy with my book cover and it’s already getting rave responses. After the cover design, I asked Arjan to do the formatting for my book and again he went above and beyond expectations. I could not have asked for a better partnership for my first self published book.
